Gritty Goes Streaking!
Hand-made collectible hockey card
On February 23, 2019, at the NHL Stadium Series game against Pittsburgh, Flyers mascot Gritty went streaking across the ice in front of 69,620 fans. After security chased him down, Gritty was ejected. Upper Deck commemorated the chase with their Game Dated Moments card.
Since Gritty bared all, I wanted to incorporate elements of his orange costume, and sourced the correct fabric. I've also used holographic materials in this 1/1, as a nod to Upper Deck's premium card history.
Gritty's character design is influenced by some of the ambiguous Muppet and Sesame Street characters from the 70's and 80's. The Cooper Black font is a tribute to that era. The text, "We're Going Streaking," references the iconic Will Ferrell scene from the movie Old School.
About my hologram collector cards
Upper Deck launched in 1989 as the first premium baseball card brand, using white glossy stock, fancy graphics... and holographic materials! So, I'm using my own holographic materials to re-design these vintage cards. The focus on these designs is repetitive pattern making, which conveys the massive overproduction of cards Upper Deck printed during the height of the boom.
