Cownah Baseball #1: Sandy Koufax
A Guest Artist OriginalThe Left Arm of God.
While many consider 1920 to 1960 the "Golden Age of Baseball," you might as well call the 1960s the "Golden Age of Pitching." With rule changes and legendary hurlers like Bob Gibson, Juan Marichal, Don Drysdale, and Whitey Ford, both league-wide batting averages dipped below .250 in 1963. The previous time this occurred, Babe Ruth was still predominantly pitching for the Red Sox.
But wait... who was the National League MVP that year? None other than Sandy Koufax.
As Willie Stargell famously once quipped, "Trying to hit him was like trying to drink coffee with a fork." Despite a shortened career due to arthritis, Koufax made his mark in a six-year span from 1961 to his retirement in 1966. In addition to his MVP award, he racked up: 4 no-hitters, 3 Cy Young Awards, 3 pitching Triple Crowns, 2 World Series MVPs, and 1 perfect game! He was the youngest player elected to the Hall of Fame.
