Handmade labels on recycled vinyl
The 1986 Topps Traded #50T, a truly iconic image. This photo session of Bo Jackson was also used by Donruss for their '86 Rookies, along with Sportflics for the '87 base set. I've borrowed its design elements to create repeating Royal gold patterns, representing the mass print production of the Junk Wax era.
The artwork is made from layered black and gold vinyl. The A-side of the album is complete with Bo's image, cut from an authentic vintage #50T, while the B-side is designed with the number from its back. My musical inspiration was Lorde's 2013 hit single, Royals... however the blue marble-colored record is actually Weezer.
But every song's like
Gold teeth, Grey Goose, trippin' in the bathroom
Bloodstains, ball gowns, trashin' the hotel room
We don't care
We're driving Cadillacs in our dreams
But everybody's like
Cristal, Maybach, diamonds on your timepiece
Jet planes, islands, tigers on a gold leash
We don't care
We aren't caught up in your love affair
And we'll never be royals (royals)
It don't run in our blood
That kind of luxe just ain't for us
We crave a different kind of buzz
Let me be your ruler (ruler)
You can call me queen bee
And baby, I'll rule (I'll rule, I'll rule, I'll rule)
Let me live that fantasy
About Junk Wax Records
In 1980, Fleer won a 5-year long monopolization lawsuit vs Topps, opening up the baseball card market for competition. Throughout the decade, production increased and boxes of wax packs filled the shelves of new hobby shops across America.
Before a record album is pressed onto vinyl, it first gets mastered, or cut, on wax. Junk Wax Records is a mashup of iconic cards from this era and recycled 12-inch LPs. My Junk Wax logo is inspired by the Fleer crown, as their court battle flipped this industry upside down.
