Ink on vintage Diamond King puzzle pieces
Available for Pre-Order
Donruss made Babe Ruth the subject of their 1st Diamond King puzzle. Portrait artist Dick Perez was hired to make the artwork, and it was printed in 1981 for the '82 set.
With the back of these puzzle pieces titled '81 Baseball Great Moments, I've taken one of the most iconic cards from the inaugural Donruss set (#119 Rickey Henderson) and inked it... creating a new puzzle.
This is the 1st piece of card art made for this unique art concept.
Piecing together Donruss history.
In 1980, Topps lost a monopolization lawsuit vs Fleer... which opened the door for new competition. After Fleer and Donruss released their inaugural sets (packaged with gum) in 1981, Topps countered with a claim for exclusive rights to package baseball cards with bubble gum. So, Fleer made stickers... and Donruss made puzzles.
