Inflated (Canseco & McGwire)
Hand-painted collectible baseball card
The Bash Brothers inflated their bodies, and the stats on their baseball cards, with steroids. At the same time, the baseball card market was overinflated too.
When I began making my bubble gum artwork, I brainstormed it as a metaphor to tell stories of not only stained careers... but also the baseball card boom and subsequent bubble burst of the late 80's and early 90's. Nearing the peak of the boom, these Canseco and McGwire All-Star Rookie cards likely had over 1 million in print circulation. Topps just kept on spittin' them out like Joe blowin' bubbles.
About my collector cards
After purchasing some old wax packs to study the size and texture of gum sticks, I developed my own paint techniques in order to replicate it. Now, I hand-paint bubble gum directly onto vintage baseball cards to create small collectibles.
